1982 Greco SA-700
SOLD

This is a really nice 1982 Greco Super Real era model that is a copy of a late 70’s ES-335, but with vintage era center block construction, fret edge binding and a much more desirable stop tail piece. Starting in 1980 Greco was making their 335 style models to copy the original models of the late 50’s and early 60’s, closely following the construction methods and materials of those guitars.

This guitar is an interesting model as it is a copy of a late 70’s ES-335, but has some of the nicer construction characteristics of the very early models as well. This guitar has a three piece maple neck and a very nice rosewood board, which the late 70’s Gibson’s also had, but unlike them it has fret edge binding. The guitar also came with a coil tap which allows you to switch to single coil mode, a feature Gibson added in 1976 and kept until I believe 1981.  It's also got Kluson style waffle back tuners.

Most of the Gibson 335’s from this era had a trapeze style tail piece, which are often converted to the more desirable stop tail piece. Parting from absolute accuracy, this Greco model came with the much more desirable stop tail piece. 1981 catalogs show the SA 700 as a model with a lacquer finish as well.

Going a bit deeper, the center block construction on this Greco is how the early 335’s were made, with no window cut in the side of the bridge pickup cavity, which later models adopted for ease of assembly. Its nice to see the more traditional, early style full length maple center block with only a hole drilled for the pickup wire in both pickup cavities. The top and edges of the center block also match up, with no overhang of the top.

Overall, some of these features are examples of better construction than used on the 70's models that it was a copy of.

Pickups are great on this model. Pickups are a matched pair and appear to be original.  They are date coded to late March 1982 which is consistent with the guitar’s April 1982 serial number.  Greco developed "The Groove" pickup during the Super Real era specifically for semi and full acoustic models:

I really like these pickups.  With the coil tap and semi-acoustic body there is a wide range of tones this guitar can produce.

Condition wise the guitars has some minor scratches and dings, hardware is faded and there is some uneven yellowing of the binding.  Overall the guitar looks and plays great, frets are in excellent shape.  It also appears to be all original.  Guitar will come with a vintage padded gig bag.  I can offer other case options for a bit more, including new cases, just ask.

Overall, a really nice and rare Greco 335.  I haven't seen this model come up for sale very often, so it appears to be a pretty rare model.

"New specialty semi-acoustic pickup The Groove brings out the lovely rich tone of the semi-acoustic body.  This piece is a great source of pride for Greco, as our technicians brought this development to life alongside the pros for total sound response.

Coils are arranged to provide optimum richness to the sound of the bodies of our semi-acoustic and full-acoustic guitars in our The Groove series of humbuckers, made specifically for the purpose of augmenting the sound of the body itself.
Semi-acoustic...and full acoustic... are set up to give special emphasis to a bluesy sound.  The Groove, developed after lengthy experimentation with numerous test pieces before we settled on its coil specs, is infused with a sound secret that goes against everything you think you know about humbuckers."
